Kent Shafer

Kent has been a public servant most of his adult life. He currently serves as vice mayor in his hometown of Delaware, Ohio.


Kent previously was police officer with Columbus, Ohio, Division of Police for more than 33 years, over half that time as a commander, retiring in 2012. During his career, Kent worked in such areas as patrol, traffic, gang, street crime and narcotics. Kent developed the city’s first gang unit to address a developing street gang crime problem and created CPD’s crime analysis unit to examine crime trends and develop strategies using up-to-date technology. In 1996, he was honored with a Washington Times Foundation National Service Award for his creation of the Mission Aligned Policing Philosophy and the Strategic Response Bureau.

Kent is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, has undergraduate degrees in electronics engineering and business administration, and studied public administration at the graduate level at Ohio State University.  Kent has served as a member of the Franklin University Criminal Justice Academic Advisory Board, an adjunct lecturer at the Ohio State University John Glenn School of Public Affairs, and is currently vice-chairman of the Delaware County Finance Authority.

In his current business, he provides consulting services to both public and private sector organizations.  As a writer, Kent has authored or co-authored numerous periodical articles, newspaper columns, and book chapters.  He lectures for professional organizations, serves as an instructor for undergraduate and graduate programs, and is a motivational speaker and trainer.

His personal mission is “To help people and organizations become more effective”. 

In addition to his many commitments, Kent is currently working on his first book, in which he shares important life lessons gained throughout his career. His goal is to help others improve their life skills, and thereby improve their ability to be successful.
